Australian fertiliser maker Complete Grow has launched Orchid Grow & Bloom, a two-stage, urea-free orchid fertiliser that matches feeding to each stage of an orchid’s growth. In a side-by-side comparison with a Dural, NSW orchid grower, Complete Grow recorded blooms 15% larger.
Sydney, NSW, Australia, 15th Oct 2026 — Australian fertiliser manufacturer Complete Grow has launched Orchid Grow & Bloom, a two-stage liquid orchid fertiliser system that matches feeding to each stage of an orchid’s growth.

Orchid Grow (NPK 14-3-11) feeds roots, leaves and pseudobulbs during active vegetative growth. Orchid Bloom (NPK 8-18-24) is used from the first visible flower spike until the final flower drops.
Both concentrates are urea-free, made in Australia and contain calcium, magnesium and six trace elements.
Orchid Grow & Bloom at a glance
- Use Orchid Grow: when there is no flower spike, bud or flower
- Use Orchid Bloom: from the first visible flower spike until the final flower drops
- Application rate: 1 mL per litre of water at every watering
- Monthly care: water with plain water once a month
- Pack size: two 500 mL double-strength concentrates
- Feed made: 1,000 litres from one pack
- Suitable for: Phalaenopsis, cymbidiums, dendrobiums, cattleyas, oncidiums and vandas
- Formulation: urea-free, with calcium, magnesium and six trace elements
What makes Orchid Grow & Bloom different from other orchid fertilisers
Orchid Grow & Bloom differs from single-formula orchid fertilisers in five ways:
- Two formulas, one for each stage. Many orchid fertilisers use one NPK ratio all year. Orchid Grow (NPK 14-3-11) is nitrogen-led for roots, leaves and pseudobulbs. Orchid Bloom (NPK 8-18-24) is high in phosphorus and potassium for spikes, buds and flowers.
- Double-strength concentrate. Both formulas carry twice the label NPK concentration of the standard liquid orchid fertilisers Complete Grow benchmarked, so 1 mL makes a full litre of feed. Each 500 mL bottle makes 500 litres, and the pack makes 1,000 litres.
- Urea-free. Neither formula contains urea, a nitrogen source common in general-purpose plant foods.
- Calcium and magnesium in both formulas. Orchids watered with rainwater still get both nutrients at every feed.
- Six trace elements. Iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper and molybdenum in every feed, with iron, manganese and zinc in chelated form.
Why use a different orchid fertiliser for growth and flowering?
During active growth, orchids build new roots, leaves and, depending on the variety, pseudobulbs. Nitrogen supports vegetative growth. Once a flower spike appears, the plant directs more of its resources to the spike, buds and flowers, where phosphorus and potassium matter more.
Orchid Grow & Bloom uses the plant itself as the feeding calendar: use Orchid Grow until the first flower spike appears, switch to Orchid Bloom until the final flower drops, then return to Orchid Grow.
In most of Australia, that means Orchid Grow through summer and into autumn, then Orchid Bloom from the first spike through winter and spring. Because the spike sets the switch, not the calendar, the system suits orchids that flower early or late. Complete Grow’s free orchid care guide shows how to spot the first flower spike and when to switch fertilisers.
“Orchids have different nutritional priorities during vegetative growth and flowering, yet many are fed with the same formula all year,” said Daniel Azzi, Plant Nutrition and Horticultural Specialist at Complete Grow.
“We wanted to make orchid feeding straightforward. Feed the stage the plant is in, and let the flower spike tell you when to switch.”
A urea-free orchid fertiliser with calcium, magnesium and trace elements
Orchid Grow and Orchid Bloom are both urea-free. Each label lists calcium at 1.2% and magnesium at 0.5% (w/v). Iron, manganese and zinc are chelated with EDTA, which keeps them soluble in the feed.
Calcium supports new plant tissue, and magnesium is a central component of chlorophyll. Both matter most when orchids are watered with low-mineral water, including rainwater.
Each of the six trace elements does a specific job:
- Iron: needed to make chlorophyll and keep new leaves green
- Manganese: drives photosynthesis and activates enzymes
- Zinc: supports the growth hormones behind new leaves and roots
- Boron: builds cell walls and supports flower and pollen development
- Copper: activates enzymes and strengthens plant tissue
- Molybdenum: helps the plant convert nitrate into usable nitrogen
Independent research shows that the form of nitrogen matters to moth orchids. A peer-reviewed study published in HortScience in 2008 found that high nitrate-to-ammonium ratios promoted the growth and flowering of a hybrid Phalaenopsis grown in two potting media, with the best growth when 75% of the nitrogen was supplied as nitrate. Growth declined when ammonium was oversupplied.
That research did not test Complete Grow products or a two-stage feeding system. It is provided as background on nitrogen nutrition in Phalaenopsis.

Orchid fertiliser results from a commercial grower in Dural
Complete Grow ran an internal side-by-side comparison at a commercial orchid and flower-growing operation in Dural, NSW.
The control group stayed on the orchid fertiliser the grower had used in previous seasons. The second group followed the two-stage program: Orchid Grow during vegetative growth, then Orchid Bloom from flower-spike development.
Complete Grow recorded blooms 15% larger in the two-stage group than in the control group. The grower also observed more flowers staying presentable for longer, which extended their sales window.
“For a commercial grower, flowers that stay presentable for longer have a longer opportunity to be sold,” Azzi said. “That was the result we were most pleased to see.”
This result comes from one internal comparison run by Complete Grow, not an independent study. Results vary with orchid variety, growing conditions and care.
How to fertilise orchids with Orchid Grow & Bloom
Shake the bottle and mix 1 mL of concentrate per litre of water. Apply the diluted feed at every watering.
A 5 mL capful makes 5 litres of feed.
Once a month, water with plain water only to refresh the potting mix and keep roots healthy.
Orchid fertiliser FAQs
What is the best fertiliser for orchids?
The best fertiliser for orchids is a urea-free, two-stage feed: a nitrogen-led formula such as NPK 14-3-11 while the orchid grows roots and leaves, followed by a bloom formula such as NPK 8-18-24 from the first flower spike until the last flower drops, with calcium and magnesium included in both.
When should I use Orchid Grow?
Use Orchid Grow when the orchid has no flower spike, buds or open flowers. Continue while the plant develops roots, leaves and pseudobulbs.
When should I switch to Orchid Bloom?
Switch to Orchid Bloom when the first flower spike becomes visible. Continue until the final flower drops, then return to Orchid Grow.
How can I tell a flower spike from a new root?
On a Phalaenopsis orchid, a new root has a rounded, smooth tip. A developing flower spike is flatter, with a mitten-shaped tip.
How often should you fertilise orchids?
Feed at every watering at 1 mL per litre of water, and water with plain water once a month.
Which orchids can use Orchid Grow & Bloom?
Orchid Grow & Bloom is formulated for commonly grown orchids, including moth orchids (Phalaenopsis), cymbidiums, dendrobiums, cattleyas, oncidiums and vandas, grown indoors, on patios or in shadehouses.
Availability
Orchid Grow & Bloom is available now as a pack of two 500 mL concentrates from the Complete Grow online store, with delivery across Australia.
