Ponta do Rosto sits on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula at Madeira’s eastern end. From the viewpoint, both the north and south coasts can be seen. Its semi-arid climate, Atlantic breezes and sparse vegetation create a landscape far removed from Madeira’s forested interior. On clear days, Porto Santo is visible across the water.

Ochre ground, volcanic rock and an open horizon give this coastline a strong sense of space and freedom. It is particularly suited to a proposal at sunrise, a private exchange of vows or wedding portraits where the surrounding cliffs and Atlantic horizon remain the main visual elements.

The wider Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula continues the same volcanic character through cliffs, trails and changing Atlantic views.

Palheiro Gardens: a ceremony framed by an established garden
Palheiro Gardens rise above Funchal on an estate dating to the early nineteenth century. Broad lawns, mature trees, camellias, historic architecture and a Baroque chapel overlook the city and bay.

The estate hosts weddings and can also accommodate proposals, vow renewals and photography. Lawns create natural gathering points, mature trees offer shade and pathways can frame an entrance through the gardens.

The atmosphere is calm and private, while the established planting provides much of the colour and visual structure a celebration needs.

Madeira’s Vineyards: Terraced Slopes and Atlantic Views
Madeira’s vineyards follow the island’s steep terrain, climbing hillsides and occupying terraces supported by stone walls. Between São Vicente and Seixal, traditional trellised vines grow close to the Atlantic, while Estreito de Câmara de Lobos has Madeira’s largest concentration of vineyards.

Prainha: Copper Sand on Madeira’s Eastern Coast
Prainha, near Caniçal, brings another volcanic palette. Its copper-toned sand is surrounded by the dry ochre landscape characteristic of nearby Ponta de São Lourenço.

Smaller and more contained than Seixal, the cove lends itself naturally to small romantic moments and couple portraits using simple, natural details. Together, Seixal and Prainha highlight the contrasting colours of Madeira’s volcanic coastline.

Porto Santo: nine kilometres of golden sand
Porto Santo changes the mood again. Its main beach stretches for nine kilometres along the southern coast, with golden sand, clear Atlantic water and a long, open horizon.

The sense of space gives romantic occasions a quieter character. A proposal may happen during an evening walk along the shore; a vow renewal can be framed by little more than the beach and sunset. Couples marrying on Madeira can also continue to Porto Santo for post-wedding photographs or the beginning of their honeymoon.

At the south-western end, Calheta Beach adds rock formations and views towards Ilhéu da Cal, while viewpoints such as Portela and Flores provide elevated perspectives across the coastline and surrounding islets.

A celebration can also move between the two islands: cliffs, gardens, vineyards and volcanic shores on Madeira, followed by open beaches and slower days beside the sea on Porto Santo.
