Fremont, California – Shilpa Bondale is a Senior Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing arm of Amazon that provides infrastructure, data, and artificial intelligence services to organizations around the world. Over more than two decades, Shilpa has built a technical career centered on hands-on software engineering and architecture. Alongside her engineering work, she is a recognized promoter of women in technology and STEM and a speaker for women in STEM. In 2024, she was honored with one of Amazon’s most prestigious recognitions, the Amazon Legend award, presented by Matt Garman for setting a new standard in customer success with generative AI services.

Shilpa’s professional path began in India before an opportunity with Philips took her to the Netherlands and eventually to the United States, where she joined Sony Electronics as a research engineer. From there, she built a distinguished career across major technology and research organizations, including Telcordia Technologies, PayPal, Apple, and Sephora. Throughout this journey, she deliberately progressed through engineering and architecture roles, from software engineer to principal software engineer and eventually to systems and solutions architect, consistently choosing to remain a technical contributor rather than move into people management. Even as an architect, she has never lost her passion for writing code.

Shilpa earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Mumbai and later pursued studies in Managerial Finance at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She holds AWS certifications as a Solutions Architect Professional, Solutions Architect Associate, Database Specialist, and Machine Learning Specialist.

Solutions architects play a central role in how organizations adopt cloud technology. They work directly with customers to understand business goals, then design secure, scalable, and cost-effective systems that bring those goals to life. As generative AI reshapes industries, architects who combine deep engineering knowledge with an understanding of customer needs help companies move from experimentation to real results. Generative AI services in particular require careful design around data security, cost, and responsible use, and architects help customers make those choices with confidence.

Alongside her technical achievements, Shilpa has become a dedicated advocate for women in technology, working to dispel the notion that STEM careers are inherently more difficult for women. She has served as a Director on the Board of Brava! for Women in the Arts, an arts and culture nonprofit supporting diverse communities, and continues to serve as an Advisor to Women Who Code, mentoring and counseling young women, particularly women of color, as they pursue careers in STEM. Within AWS, she leads internal initiatives to help women navigate career progression and achieve promotions.

Shilpa credits much of her success to self-determination and a refusal to be discouraged by the challenges of a demanding field. She has been fortunate to have wonderful mentors, both men and women, who guided and sponsored her throughout her career. Just as important, she has had unwavering support from her family, particularly her husband, which allowed her to stay focused on her professional growth.

Some of the best advice Shilpa ever received came from her mother early in life: embrace change. Life is defined by change, and her mother believed women are naturally built to endure it. If she ever found herself too comfortable, that was the warning sign and the moment to reach out for help and let her mentors show her the way.

Shilpa tells young women entering technology not to expect success to come easily or be handed to them, and to be prepared for the struggle. She encourages them to find a place or activity they can turn to when feeling stressed and to build a strong support system of advocates around them. She also stresses being intentional about where and how they seek help rather than trying to manage everything alone.

The biggest challenge in her field, in Shilpa’s view, remains the persistent lack of pay parity between men and women, along with the career interruptions many women face when taking on family responsibilities during major life changes. At the same time, she sees real opportunity in building mentorship programs and alliances that help bring women back into technology and support their long-term growth, as well as in the growing push toward transparent pay practices. She envisions a future with real, transparent pay parity in technology and works to help women reclaim their careers after stepping away for family responsibilities.

Determination, mentorship, and sponsorship are central to how Shilpa approaches both her career and her advocacy. She places a high value on gender equity, particularly closing the pay and opportunity gaps women face in technology. She also believes in self-awareness, especially in recognizing when to delegate responsibilities so that women can sustain long, fulfilling careers. Guided by her own experiences, she remains focused on building a lasting network of like-minded women committed to advancing gender equity across technology and other male-dominated fields.
