Connecticut has approved Saga Education’s high-impact math tutoring for grades 6-10, an evidence-based strategy to boost student achievement.
CT, UNITED STATES, October 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) has approved Saga Education for use by Connecticut schools in grades 6-10 math. Saga is the nation’s nonprofit leader in helping states and districts implement an effective strategy to improve student achievement in math by getting high-impact tutoring right.
High-impact tutoring (HIT), also called high-dosage tutoring, is one of the strongest, evidence-based interventions for helping students succeed and building their confidence as learners. Saga Education’s tutoring approach has earned a Tier 1 “Strong” rating from Evidence for ESSA, signifying that the program has been rigorously evaluated and shows significant effectiveness in improving student outcomes. Recent research on Saga’s live-online, high-impact tutoring model revealed that it increased students’ math GPAs, made them more likely to pass the Regents math exam, and led to higher Regents scores when compared with students not in tutoring.
“When a ninth-grader fails Algebra I, the stakes couldn’t be higher. It reduces their likelihood of graduating on time by 30 percent or more,” said Saga Education CEO and co-founder Alan PG Safran. “High-impact tutoring helps change that trajectory. By helping students clear this milestone, districts prevent students from dropping out while preserving tens of thousands in lost per-pupil funding.”
Saga’s recommended framework for HIT embeds it during the regular school day. Tutoring occurs at least three times per week for at least 90 minutes, for the full school year. Saga’s curriculum aligns with federal and state standards. Instructional Program Managers meet with teachers to ensure tutoring aligns with classroom instruction and tutors receive ongoing coaching and professional development. In Saga’s model, tutors meet with students in tutor-to-student ratios of 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4.
Saga Education deploys a suite of products designed to enable effective tutoring, including Saga Coach, Saga Connect, and AI-powered tutor coaching. Live-online tutoring is delivered through Saga Connect, a secure virtual classroom designed for small-group tutoring. Saga’s curriculum is standards-aligned for a tutorial context, with flexible units that align with classroom instruction.
About Saga Education
Each year, nearly one million students risk failing Algebra 1, a critical gateway to graduation. High-impact tutoring (HIT) is a proven, evidence-based intervention that accelerates learning through frequent, personalized instruction. Research by the University of Chicago Education Lab, in partnership with Saga Education, shows that HIT can double student learning in a single year. Backed by 20+ years of experience and 10 randomized controlled trials, Saga Education’s model helps boost student engagement, confidence, and attendance, and tutors contribute meaningfully to the teacher pipeline. If districts help students clear the Algebra 1 gateway, they will preserve subsequent per pupil dollars that otherwise would be lost due to students dropping out because of academic failures.
